Achievement of the organization

(a) Schools for the persons with intellectual disabilities:

SWID Bangladesh pioneered special education system inBangladeshand still now it is the biggest organization which provides special education for the persons with intellectual disabilities in 59 districts through its specials schools. Statistics of educational service is given bellow:

  • Total number classes: 300
  • Total number of student: 8500
  • Total number of schools: 85
  • Number of staff: 638

(b) Awareness development with government involvement:

  • Developed awareness among the common people regarding education and training of the persons with intellectual disabilities.
  • Drew attention of the government for development activities of the disabled people, as a result government has come forward to support educational program of the persons with intellectual disabilities by providing part salary support to the 442 teachers/staff of special education program of SWID Bangladesh.
  • As a result of combined efforts of SWID Bangladesh and other organizations, government has developed National Disability Policy and Disabled Welfare Act 2001.

 (c) Professional development:

  • Developed a group of professionals, teachers and other staff to work for the development and welfare of the persons with intellectual disabilities. SWID has organized training programs to develop a group of professionals who has become the key professionals and trainer for the teaching staff. Both the professionals and teaching staff has been trained locally as well as from abroad. It has been running the training programme for the staff of other organizations to disseminate knowledge and skills of handling the persons with intellectual disabilities.

(d) Cultural development of the persons with intellectual disability:

  • Organized a good number of cultural programs with the participation of the persons with intellectual disabilities.
  • Persons with intellectual disabilities have shown remarkable performances in the World Special Olympics

Students of SWID Bangladesh participated in the Para-Art Exhibition, Tokeyo-2009. Drawings of 3 participants were selected and one of was awarded.

 (e) Promotion of inclusive education:

It advocates for mainstream education for the persons with intellectual disabilities. As part of its initiative it took the programs which have some positive impact in promoting access of the persons with disability in the country:

 (f) Formation of other auxiliary organizations:

SWID Bangladesh initiated to establish two other organizations for the benefit of the persons with intellectual disabilities ofBangladesh, those are:

(a) Special Olympics, Bangladesh– SWID Bangladesh communicated with International  Special Olympics and organized a local independent body to form the ‘Special Olympics, Bangladesh’ in 1993 which is responsible for organizing Special Olympics games in Bangladesh and participation in the World Special Olympics by the persons with intellectual disabilities.

(b) Trust for the Welfare of the Intellectually Disabled (TWID)– TWID has been formed in 1994 for the rehabilitation of the persons with intellectual disabilities and acting as the guardian of the persons with intellectual disabilities in absence of their guardians.

(g) Networking with other organizations:

SWID Bangladesh maintains working relationship with other organizations of similar category to strengthen united movement to achieve its goal. It is the full member of Inclusion International, and Asian Federation for the Intellectually Disabled (AFID).

 Present Donors and income

Main donor is the Ministry of Social Welfare, Government of Bangladesh, and small funds are received from Jatiya Samaj Kallayan Parishad, Jatio Protibandhi Unnayan Foundation, local donation, and interest from reserved money. 

 Capacity of the organization

 SWID Bangladesh has following assets to implement the said project:

  • A group of professionals under the banner of National Institute for the Intellectually Disabled (NIID) who are capable of organizing and running projects.
  • Good number of social activists who can participate in implementing the project activities where necessary.
  • Has a network through out the country in 34 districts with its branches
  • It has available physical facility to run some of project activities e.g. orientation program for the activist members, National Conference, and other office works.
  • It has working relation with the government and other NGOs.
  • It has experience in organizing such programs.
  • Above all it has sound financial and administrative management to utilize money with due care and run projects.
  • Auditorium and Training room,
  • Specialized Library with 500 books and journals
  • SWID Bangladesh is the initiator and founder of Special Olympics for the intellectually disabled, and a good number of persons with intellectual disability won gold, silver and bronze medals in the World Special Olympics as shown below:-
